A man implicated in string of armed robberies on the Eastern Shore and in Delaware is absolutely innocent and will be released from the Queen Anne’s County Detention Center tomorrow, said Queen Anne’s County States Attorney Lance Richardson.
“We’re releasing him as soon as we legally can,” Richardson said in an interview with the Spy on Thursday.
Another suspect in the case, Lytia Bailey, 27, of Chestertown was picked up in Dover on Dec. 3. Soon after her arrest she implicated Brian Daniels, 41, of Trappe, Maryland as her accomplice.
“It’s an unusual situation where a person confesses to everything and then implicates someone who had nothing to do with the crime,” Richardson said.
Richardson said that Daniels was seen on one of the surveillance tapes prior to a robbery but “it was unrelated.”
“Maybe she knew who he was and that’s why she threw him out there,” Richardson said.
Richardson said Daniels did not request a lawyer and cooperated with the lead investigator, TFC William Abey of the Maryland State Police Criminal Investigation Division.
“After Daniels’ alibis checked out, Abey immediately brought it to my attention,” Richardson said. “Abey was convinced Daniel’s was not our guy. I immediately said I was filing a motion to dismiss. I’m dropping the charges against him tomorrow morning, which is as quickly as the court can do it.”
Asked whether Bailey would be charged with making false statements to police, Richardson said Bailey, “if convicted [of the robberies], could be looking at 150 years in prison.”
He said tacking on the charges of making false statements would have little impact in the sentencing, if Bailey is convicted.
Abey told the Spy on Thursday that MSP investigators were actively pursuing leads on three other suspects in the robberies.
