In Part II of our coverage of Del. Heather Mizeur’s appearance before the Democratic Club of Queen Anne’s County’s last Thursday, the likely candidate for governor discussed her reluctance to allow Marcellus Shale drilling in Western Maryland.
She also fielded a question from Tom Leigh of the Midshore RiverKeeper Conservancy regarding the ongoing dispute between environmental groups and Clean Chesapeake Coalition, which believes the state’s Bay cleanup plan poorly addresses the massive hemorrhages of sediment and nutrients through the Conowingo Dam into the upper Chesapeake during heavy storms and snow melts.
In her closing remarks, Mizeur discussed what Maryland’s future could look like if elected governor in 2014.
The video is just under 10 minutes.
Fletcher R. Hall says
The usual political stump speech.
As usual for candidates from across the bridge, mostly platitudes and not familiar with the issues which affect this part of Maryland.
Another liberal in the O’Malley mode.
Petey S. Bestmom says
Being openly gay is going to be a huge liability in getting primary votes. And not just on the eastern shore. Even though cultural attitudes are shifting, don’t think majority of Democratic voters are quite ready for a female gay governor. Although it makes little sense I suspect they would be more accepting of a gay male candidate for governor than a female gay candidate. Go figure.
Bob Kramer says
Don’t forget that she was one of the few Other Shore folks who stood up for us when the state was closing down the Upper Shore mental health facility in C’town. She and delegate Smigiel certainly made an odd couple on that issue.
Jay Yerkes says
She is not from “the other side of the bridge”.
Heather owns property in town and cares very much about our state.
She has a very good chance of having my vote.
Martha Holland says
Actually, Heather owns a farm near Chestertown and is very aware of the issues important to the Eastern Shore. One of her major areas of interest is the environment, particularly the Bay and the issues surrounding fracking. If she decides to run for governor, the Eastern Shore will be well represented.
Frances Miller says
Del. Mizeur owns a farm north of Chestertown and is very familiar with Eastern Shore issues. I’ve heard her speak on a number of occasions and found her dynamic and well-informed. Looking forward to hearing a lot more from her.
Kevin Shertz says
Um, Fletcher, Delegate Mizeur and her partner own real estate in Chestertown, and have for years.
You’re entitled to your opinion, but not your own facts.
Why not try the novel tactic of debating issues on their merits instead of some artificial construct (which, it seems, exists only within your own mind?)
Ron Moore says
Always nice to see the electoral equivalent of “I have black friends!” hard at work on the Spy comment section. Electing someone because of their gender or sexual preference is just as much of a disservice as not electing them for it. Let her run on her merits, and see how she stacks up.
Rory Rivers says
Are you talking about the comments on this very article or another one?
Petey S. Bestmom says
“Let her run on her merits, and see how she stacks up.”
Ideally, that is the way it should be Ron. But, realistically, we know voters are going to make up their minds not based solely on the issues, don’t we.
The personal side has always been a huge factor in elections. Think back how what a big deal it was in 1960. Could a Roman Catholic be elected president? When Gerald Ford had to take over in ’74 the story became jeeez, this is the first Divorced First Lady for America! (Andrew Jackson’s wife apparently did not count since marriage/ divorce records were a bit murky back in the 1840s)
Reagan is credited as being the 1st divorced man to be elected prez. A milestone! Obama the 1st bi-racial person eleced prez ! Another milestone!
Maybe 2016 will be the first woman elected prez. Dunno, but if it happens, Milestone! An openly gay woman elected Governor of Maryland? Don’t think so.
Just saying – don’t see Heather M. coming out on top in a statewide primary race among Democratic voters which is the only avenue for her to reach the governor’s mansion. Whether you agree with it or not , any candidate’s sexual orientation is going to be a huge factor, even in “progressive” Maryland.
(Sorry if this offends people on the Spy comments section. I am just speaking facts, not making a judgement)
Bob Kramer says
Petey… shouldn’t offend anyone who understands the Laws of Politics. Well said.
